With "A London War Child Crosses the Ocean", author and adventurer Lawrence Bohme begins the whimsically told but scrupulously faithful story of his first 41 years - entitled My Very Long Youth because "due to a force beyond my control I only started growing up, or calming down, after that age". The result is simultaneously a retrospective diary, an eye-witness history book, a personal collection of his own drawings and photographs, a one-way, slow-motion travel guide, a movie made up of stills and, to put it politely, in his own wry words, “a partially contrite confession of compulsive concupiscence"…Born mid-war in a southern suburb of London, to a German half-Jewish ex-tramp become war document translator and his stenographer-become-wife, our "little English gentleman", having survived a V2 rocket attack that blows the front off his Croydon bungalow, immigrates with his family to a safer and more comfortable life in Western Canada, where he spends his next ten years "among very beautiful trees and not much else of interest". Lawrence relates his father's own youthful tales of wandering, mostly on foot, through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa looking for adventure, a job and anything else that came his way, "which had the effect of making me resolve to one day do even better". Thanks to the boy’s free-spirited mother Joan, he discovers at the early age of 11 or 12 writers like Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh, Dylan Thomas, André Gide and D.H. Lawrence (for whom he was named) which quite naturally makes him dream of one day putting pen to paper himself. After her husband Edward begrudgingly allows Joan to spend a winter away in Montparnasse studying art under André Lhote - "The Last Cubist" - she defiantly returns with the plan of setting out on her own, children in tow, to become a serious painter. The ensuing and very bitter divorce proves painfully humiliating for Lawrence, although being "cheerful and hopeful by nature" he turns the page and willingly follows his adored and fearless Mum to Mexico. There he learns his first of several foreign languages and discovers bullfighting at the hands of his dear friend Floriano, son of Spanish Civil War refugees. After several misadventures in Mexico, including a violent earthquake and Joan's heart being broken by Hector, a half-caste Mexican architect, the little family moves to Kingston, Jamaica B.W.I., which is Lawrence's first "tropical paradise", replete with dark-skinned dancing girls who capture his febrile imagination. By the end of 1958 they have arrived in New York, with the goal of living in a place called Greenwich Village, "which is where I was really born, at age 16”...My Very Long Youth is composed of 16 parts (gathered in seven separate books) written between 2001 and 2018. Their descriptive titles tell the author's story on their own: 1) A London War Child Crosses the Ocean 2) Fierce Land of Aztecs, Sweet Isle of Jamaica 3) Coming of Age in Greenwich Village 4) Student from America in Franco's Spain 5) Semi-Barbarian at the Sorbonne 6) From Rue Mouffetard to Rome and Sicily 7) School Teacher in Queens, Logger in California 8) A Poet's Pilgrimage to Rio de Janeiro 9) Shack in the Favela, Village in Bahia 10) Two Foolish Years, and a Fresh Start 11) White and Alone in “Baby Doc’s” Haiti 12) Hell in Cartagena, Heaven on San Andrés Island 13) North to Cayman, East To Sint Maarten and Saint Barth 14) The Card Man in Manhattan 15) Au Revoir, Provence and 16) After Paris, Freedom.Lawrence was educated at the University of Madrid and the Sorbonne, “but most of all in the cities and streets of the Western World, northern and southern hemispheres, which I felt I had to discover first hand before sitting down to write, about my adventures and myself”. A retired translator and interpreter, he now lives in southern France where he has just published an historical and artistic guide entitled “Old Nice’s Changing Heart”.
